Hello to you.
Happy Just One Thing Thursday!
One Thought
In my last podcast, I shared my take on honesty versus vulnerability—you can listen here.
This is something I’ve been reflecting on recently, and I’ve concluded—for me, at least—that what often appears to be a display of vulnerability is, in fact, a defence mechanism of honesty. What I mean is that the more honest I am about my faults, failures, and shortcomings, the less opportunity there is for you to spot them first.
For you to see them before I do is exactly the type of vulnerability I try to avoid. And yet, we can’t play that game or dance that dance with God.
The truth is, He already knows and sees it all—so what do we do with that reality? Do we put up defence mechanism after defence mechanism, trying to protect ourselves from being vulnerable with our Creator? Or do we embrace the vulnerability of being fully seen and fully known, trusting that instead of being met with harshness, criticism, or condemnation, we are met with love, compassion, and abounding grace (Psalm 103 NIV), along with His reassuring presence (Psalm 139 MSG)?
One Bible Verse
“God, investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand. I’m an open book to you; even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking. You know when I leave and when I get back; I’m never out of your sight. You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence. I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too— your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful— I can’t take it all in!”
Psalms 139:1-6 MSG
One Therapeutic Practice
Take a moment to reflect: Is your honesty a shield or an invitation?
Notice – Think about a recent time you shared something personal. Was it to truly connect, or was it a preemptive defence?
Name – Identify how that honesty felt in your body. Did it bring relief, tension, or detachment?
Reframe – Ask yourself, “What would it feel like to be seen and still be safe?” Consider how God’s love allows you to be fully known without fear.
